Ellsworth Quinlan's "Under the artichoke bush" begins with family history and gives a general picture of life around Half Moon Bay, Calif. from 1905-1915. Most prominent are his maternal Irish grandparents Mary Elizabeth Dolan and Patrick Francis McGovern and Quinlan himself as a boy. The text mentions facets of everyday life such as rural medicine, money, the 1906 earthquake, mud slides, importance of neighbors, church, agriculture, transportation (horses, cars, stage coach, the Ocean Shore Railway), visits to San Francisco, civic improvements, entertainment, fishing, lumber mills, Rosie Cream's brothel, etc. In addition to Half Moon Bay, the towns of Pescadero and San Gregorio are also described, as is the peninsula in general.
